Robert Coles Stuchbery
1886 - 1981
Robert Stuchbury was born on the 24th of July 1886 in Portland Victoria. At the age of 21 he would marry Florence Ellen Collyer and the couple would go on to have 8 children together. He pursued a career in education, and does not seem to have served in the First World War. However, when war came to Australia in 1942, Robert felt some call to duty. He was working as head teacher at a school in Kaniva Victoria.
He enlisted in the Australian Volunteer Defense Corps (VDC) on the 25th of May 1942 at the age of 55 years and 10 months. He was subsequently posted to the 14th Battalion of the VDC and upon demonstrating leadership ability, likely carried over from his time as a school teacher, was promoted to Lance Corporal. Between the 17th and 23rd of January 1943 he was posted as an instructor at a school cadet unit but returned to his unit shortly thereafter.
Some time after the war, he gave up working as a teacher and became a clerk. He continued this profession up until his death, at least according to Electoral rolls. Robert passed away on the 11th of September 1981, age 95.
