Hakodate Camp 1-B
In December of 1942, a new POW camp was established at Muroran, Hokkaido. The camp held a total of 509 prisoners. Of these, 349 were British, 155 Dutch and 5 US personnel. The camp had a relatively high mortality rate with 53 of the inmates dying over the course of the camps two year service. In June of 1945, along with prisoners from a number of other camps, the men at Muroran were moved further inland where they began working in the coal mine at Ashibetsu. They remained there until liberated in September.
