This officer pattern home service coat belonged to Captain William Charles Finnis of the 1st North Canterbury Volunteer Rifles. Finnis was the officer in command of the Cycle Corps and later went on to serve in France as a major with the NZ Service Corps in 1917-1918. The tunic is constructed with super fine wool and gold bullion for the cuff and collar decorations. The epaulette only has one pip, the rank of lieutenant, while the cuff rank is that of a captain, indicating either missing pips or the neglect of FInnis to update the epauettes.
